The Artist in Her Natural Environment

The Artist in Her Natural Environment

Earlier this year, I needed some professional shots of me at work in my studio for an application of one sort or another. And it's really never a bad idea to have professional headshots in general. I found local photographer Joanna Joy. She had a great rate to spend an hour with me in my studio to see what we could come up with.

The photo for this post is one of my faves because it catches me in motion, describing something in that particular painting. You can also see a sliver of the pride flag that hangs around my yard in the reflection of the glass door right by my face. There's a small plaque in front of the stack of office-looking materials just behind me; if you zoom in, you might be able to see that it reads "let me file that under fuck it." There's a little basket of stuffies on the green chair behind the easel that you can see. All of these elements rather perfectly encapsulate snippets of me and my past and my style. Nothing overtly showy or forced, and mostly things that I appreciate moreso than they make for a splashy studio shot.

Joanna did a great job with the session. I have a bunch of photos that I can use for various stock needs for my website, my newsletter, and across social media. I've got lots of ideas for them and just need to figure out how to spice up my Portfolio and About Me pages with these great pics. I've been sitting on them for quite some time, trying to get my brain to consolidate all the "ooh shiny" thoughts into something actionable. That's my plan for December.
