Travel Tuesdays: Sonoita

Believe it or not, Arizona has wine country. There's a lovely area not too far away from Tucson. A little boost in elevation can bring about cooler temps and a bit more weather that at least some grapes really enjoy. There are rolling hills and rocky protrusions that tumble into mountain ranges. It makes for some very picturesque backgrounds to wine tastings.
The wineries themselves vary from the pioneers of the 70s and 80s (yes, as in 40-50 years ago; we're a pretty young viticulture area) to new, modern spots. Quirky & playful to Serious Napa-esque Vibes. Sweeter wines to bold and dry. Local, estate-grown grapes to grapes from other areas in the state or even next door in New Mexico. Mostly, it's all a very relaxed affair.
Living in Tucson for more than a dozen years, we've found our own faves and hotspots, signing up for wine club memberships here and there to ensure we get special bottles and support the whole AZ winery enterprise. But, honestly, it's not just about the wine. Yes, it's good and some of the vintages are excellent enough to be served as dedicated pairings in the upper echelons of the Arizona dining scene. This is where I get to trot out that well-worn saying "it's about the journey."
The drive to Sonoita AVA is one of Arizona's many scenic highways, and the high-desert vistas just seem to make every glass of wine taste even better. Tucson doesn't really have a ton of hustle & bustle (especially with big brother Phoenix keeping itself very busy not too far away), but getting away from our little city to cooler climes, wide open spaces, and tasty beverages is always a special trip.
